ABSTRACT
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is the main biopolymer used in intra-articular injections for osteoarthritis (OA). HA is usually applied at 1–3 mg/mL, though the optimal level remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of HA concentration on the friction in osteoarthrosis. Samples from the osteoarthritic head of a human femur and porcine controls were tested in a pin-on-plate setup. The results showed a statistically significant effect of HA concentration on the friction in a group of porcine cartilage. In a group of osteoarthritic cartilage, such a relationship did not occur. This comparison highlights that degeneration limits HA’s effect.
